iOS 11 2017: Safari Will Keep Third-Party Ad Trackers from Stalking You

Have you ever been worried that advertisers know a little bit too much about you? Though advertisements are what keep many sites and services free, it can be creepy when a banner ad correctly guesses your favorite band or when a Youtube commercial seems to know you’ve been shopping for new shoes. According to Apple’s announcement at the WWDC, this might come to an end for Safari users.

Part 1: WWDC 2017: Updates for the New Safari Browser

Here are some of the updates for the new Safari browser according to Apple’s WWDC in 2017:

1 Block third-party ad trackers from following you as your browse different sites.

What does this mean? Basically, advertisers will not be able to mine you for information as effectively, and your activities on one site may no longer determine the targeted ads that you get on other sites. This can be a huge privacy advantage. It means that advertisers will have a harder time building a profile on you based on your browsing activity. Not only does this mean they are less able to spy on you, but there is also less information that could fall into the hands of third-parties if advertisers decide to sell your information.

On the other hand, this also makes your advertising less targeted. Most users probably won’t notice a difference, however.

2 Say goodbye to videos that autoplay

You can browse in Safari as it will keep unexpected and unwanted videos that wautoplay in the first place. However, if you have some favorite sites that you always want some videos to play, just use the new per-site settings in Safari to enable media autoplay.

3 Apple Pay support

You can now use Apple Pay right on your browser to shop online. This makes the experience of shopping much more secure and convenient.

4 Split view on iPad

You can view two sites at the same time using a split view feature on iPad now. This means that you can multitask and browse more than one site without having to switch tabs.

5 Forcing sites to use HTML5

If a video site has the option to use HTML5, as well as Flash or Silverlight, Safari will automatically default the videos to HTML5. This way, you are using the most efficient and open standard for web video. Both Flash and Silverlight are slowly declining.

6 Redesigned bookmarks sidebar

The new interface makes it easy to get to the bookmarks that you’ve saved. You can also view your history more easily.

7 Better algorithm for Frequently Visited Sites

Safari will rank these sites in a more relevant order.

8 Safari will remember your zoom

Different sites require different levels of zoom. Now Safari will automatically zoom to the level that you used last on a site.

Limits and Disadvantages

Of course, the new Safari browser is still has a few disadvantages according to WWDC 2017. For one, it does not preserve your privacy 100%. Few browsers do. Your history, cache, and information are still available to anyone who has access to your device and wants to snoop. The only thing you can do to be totally secure in your privacy is permanently delete your Safari data.

Part 2: How to Permanently Delete Safari Data in iOS 11
