John Poole (Geekbench developer) has recently mapped out performance for iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s and has come to the conclusion that newer updates from Apple (i.e. 10.2.1, 11.2.0, etc.) throttle the performance of different devices, especially the older iPhones and even iPhone 7 with older batteries. There is a popular thread on Reddit about it and some users have reported that replacing the older batteries with newer ones has restored the CPU clock speeds and performance back to normal.

Apple responded to this by admitting that they intentionally do this in order to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down due to an old battery.

Why Apple Slows down Old iPhones?

1 Protect Devices with Older Batteries

According to Apple, they do this to protect the devices with relatively older batteries. They said that lithium ion batteries cannot handle the processing demands as expected when they age, it results in problems such as the device shutting down unexpectedly. So they release new update that causes the iPhone to slow down and reduce its performance in order to prevent those unexpected shutdowns.

So the reason to slowing down older iPhones is pretty clear. It is directly associated with the flagging battery. As the processor of an iPhone makes a big current draw from such a battery, the battery may deliver the current in spikes which is bad because it can damage the different components of the phone. As a precaution, iPhone unexpectedly shuts down to protect its processor from that damage.

This unexpected shutdown issue became widespread in 2016, which forced the company to come up with an update that included a fix, causing the phone to slow down with somewhat old, low-charged, or cold battery, Apple said.

Other common reasons why old iPhones slow down include (but not limited to) the following:

2 OS Upgrades

New OS upgrades introduce new features and functionalities. And if your device has a relatively older hardware, then it makes sense that it doesn’t have enough resources to handle the extra overhead. As a result, the device feels a bit slower.

3 App Updates

Similar to OS upgrade, some apps also have the same effect on phone’s performance. Apps become bloated with newer updates and the added features require relatively more resources, causing them to eat up more CPU and RAM. Hence, the phone’s performance feels slower.

What to Do If Your iPhone Performs Slower after Updating

As mentioned above, new firmware updates introduce new features that may slow down your device if it has relatively older hardware. Fortunately, there are ways to accelerate the performance of your device and one of them is iMyFone Umate Pro. This ultimate iPhone data eraser tool offers quick and convenient solutions to clean up junk and unnecessary files on your device and boost its performance. iPhone tends to slow down when its storage becomes full as some features and apps on the device require free space to perform optimally. iMyFone Umate Pro is the perfect solution for freeing up space on iPhones.
