Double-check if the lightning cable you are using is of high quality or not, cables with low quality can work for charging but not for connecting to a computer or syncing data. When buying a cable from the store or if already bought, check if the "Made for iPhone" (MFi) logo is there on the box or not – if it's there your cable is MFi certified and is of high quality.
