If you believe your iPhone is water damaged, then consider the following one-stop solution guide to fix water damaged iPhone.

Phase 1. Check Whether Your iPhone is Water-Damaged

The first thing you need to do is to inspect your phone for water damage.

Sometimes, phones may experience problems which mimic issues caused through water damage, but the phone is actually malfunctioning for another reason.

There are some simple ways you can check for water damage by looking for standard signs and symptoms as well as going through a checklist of common water damage signs.

How to Check for iPhone Water Damage

The most logical way to check for iPhone water damage is to look at the LCI or the liquid content indicator. If your iPhone is older, then this slot can be found inside the charging port as well as the headphone jack.

Here is how you can check the LCI to see if your iPhone has been water damaged on a newer iPhone:

Step 1: Insert a paperclip into the SIM tray in order to make it pop out. You will need to press down with some force, but be careful not to break the paperclip in the process.

Step 2: Remove the SIM tray and then remove the SIM card. Hold your iPhone in your hands with the screen facing downwards.

Step 3: Take a flashlight and look into the now empty SIM card slot. You will see the LCI.

Step 4: Look for color on the LCI. If the LCI is red or pink, then that means your iPhone has been exposed to liquid. If the LCI is white, that means your iPhone interior isn't exposed to water.

If you suspect that your iPhone may have been water damaged, it’s best to check if there are symptoms before you start going through the trouble of attempting to repair any alleged water damage.

Symptoms of iPhone Water Damage

If your iPhone has actually been damaged by exposure to water (or a similar liquid), then it will likely be experiencing a particular set of symptoms.

These symptoms can help you figure out whether or not your iPhone has actually been exposed to and damaged by water.

  • An unusually hot iPhone: if your phone continues to get unusually hot, this could be a sign that your iPhone's lithium ion batteries have been damaged by water.
  • If your iPhone has no sound: When the speakers inside the iPhone become water damaged, they either cease working entirely or they sound distorted, weak or otherwise not as they should.
  • Inability to charge or charging issues: One of the most common problems associated with water damage is the phone's inability to charge or the inability to charge at a normal rate.

Phase 2: Try to Keep iPhone Data Safe

If you believe your iPhone has been water damaged, then you need to do everything you can to keep your data safe.

The following steps will help you insure that your personal data from contacts to files are kept safe in case your device has been damaged through water exposure.

Check Whether You Have Available iTunes Backups

The first thing you need to do is check whether or not you have any iTunes backups of your iPhone data. This is one of the simplest methods of protecting your data in case of water damage.

Step 1:  Open up your Windows search bar.

Step 2: Type in %appdata% or %USERPROFILE% and this will bring up the location of your iTunes backup in the search results. Press "Enter" to open the folder.

Step 3: Double click on the "Apple" or "Apple Computer" folder, then go into the folder marked Mobile Sync, and then finally into the Backup folder. If you have an iTunes backup, you will see your available data in this folder.

Check Whether You Have Available iCloud Backups

Another method you can try is checking the availability of iCloud backups of your iPhone data.

Step 1: Go into the Settings menu on your device.

Step 2: Select your Name, then go into iCloud, and then into Manage Storage.

Step 3: Choose "Backup" to view your available backups and this will include the date of your latest backup from your iPhone.

Note

If you do not have any backups, you can use iTunes or iCloud to make a full backup. Or you can use a professional tool to selectively back up what you need.

Phase 3: Fix Water-Damaged iPhone

If your iPhone has been damaged by water, you will need to act as quickly as possible in order to fix the damage and hopefully prevent more serious and permanent damage from occurring.

Option 1: Try to Dry a Water Damaged iPhone Manually

One of the first steps you will need to take after your phone is exposed to water is to dry your phone manually. Drying your phone manually may not always work depending on how much of your iPhone’s interior was exposed, but it is worth a try.

The following are the steps you can take to try and dry an iPhone with water damage.

Step 1.Get the iPhone out of water ASAP and power it off

To avoid inflicting even more damage on the device, the first thing you should do is get it out of water as fast as you can. If the device hasn't already been powered off, power it off and don't try to power it back on at any moment. Powering on the device may cause short circuiting on some essential parts of the device.

Step 2.Dry the Wet iPhone

The next thing you should do is try to dry the moisture on the iPhone as much as you can. One of the nest ways to do this is to wrap the device in a towel and let it soak up the moisture.

Step 3.Find a Hardware Store with DampRid

Next, try and find a hardware store in your locality that carries DampRid. It may not be very easy to locate one without your iPhone but you can borrow a friend's device or search online.

Step 4.Use Silica Gel

As a drying agent, Silica gel is one of the ways to get your device dried as quickly as possible. Pack the iPhone in a sealable plastic bag and then add packets of Silica gel to the bag. The more you can find, the better. You can find Silica gel from arts and crafts stores.

Most people recommend uncooked rice as a way to dry out the iPhone but we don't recommend that you use uncooked rice since it doesn't always work. Tests have shown that Rice is an ineffective drying agent as compared to oatmeal and Silica gel. It may even be a better idea to just leave the phone out in the open to dry naturally rather than trying to submerge it in a drying agent.

Step 5. Open all the Ports

One of the most effective ways to get your phone to dry is to open all the ports. We must warn however, that you should only do this if you are confident that you can successfully do DIY repairs on your iPhone. If you can, unscrew the bottom screws to access the interior. Just keep in mind that doing this may void the warranty you already have and that DIY work may damage the iPhone even further. Do it only if you know what you're doing and if you are willing to take the risk.

Step 6.Attempt to Switch it on

Once you are certain the device is as dry as can be, try turning it on and see what happens. You may be lucky and it turns on and works normally again.

Option 2: Try to Fix It if There are Some Glitches after Drying

Drying your phone will sometimes resolve all water damage issues, but more often than not, you will still experience some glitches even after extensively drying your phone.

Selectively Recover Data from iTunes Backup

The official iTunes restore method is insufficient when it comes to data recovery and cannot recover all types of files selectively.

That is the reason why you need rely on a program like D-Back which allows you to choose only the data you want to recover.

The following are the steps you need to take to selectively recover iPhone data from an iTunes backup:

Step 1: From the Start menu on the program, select the tab that says Recover from iTunes Backup. Select "Next," then choose which iTunes backup you want to recover data from on the list.

Select iTunes Backup

Step 2: Select the type of files you want recovered from the list and select "Scan".

select file types

Step 3: Preview and select the files you want to recover, then select “recover” to finish the job.

Selectively Recover Data from iCloud Backup

The official iCloud restore is not always the best option when it comes to recovering your data because it needs to erase all data on your device first.

In order to prevent the loss of current data, you can choose D-Back as the alternative.

Step 1: Open the D-Back and select the "Recover from iCloud Backup" option. Log into your iCloud account using the provided form.

Step 2: Select the iCloud backup you want to recover data from, then select "Next".

Select iCloud Backup

Step 3: Choose the data type you need and then “Scan”.

Select the files you wish to recover

Step 4: Preview the scanned data and choose what you need to recover.

Back is the preferred option for recovering your iPhone data, whether you choose to recover from iTunes, iCloud or from the phone directly. There are many feedback from users.
