HEIC format photos can save you a lot of room on your device, but unfortunately this format is not yet popular on a lot of PC software. This means you may not be able to view your photos and use them the same way you would more popular formats like JPG.
What Are The Problems That HEIC/HEIF Poses for PC Users
There’s nothing inherent in a PC that makes it impossible for it to be able to read HEIC or HEIF images. In fact, in the near future, it may be more common for a PC to be able to read these types of images. For now, though, HEIC/HEIF is considered new technology, so there’s not a lot of software that supports it—including most PC image software.
In fact, while a lot of cloud software is trending towards making HEIC images viewable on the apps themselves, OneDrive (Microsoft’s cloud application) lags behind and has to convert HEIC images before they can be used.
All of this makes it harder to view and edit HEIC photos on a PC. How do you fix these issues?
How to Fix the Problems That HEIC / HEIF Poses for PC Users
There are two main issues that you will face when it comes to using HEIC on a PC. First you will want to be able to view HEIC photos, and next you will need a way to convert HEIC to a more common format like JPG (so that it’s easier to edit and use).
1. How to View iOS 11 HEIC Photos on PC for Free
1.1 Using HEIC Photos Viewer
One of the easiest ways to view HEIC photos on your PC is by using iMyFone TunesMate Viewer which is fully compatible with iOS 11 and HEIC format. This is software that lets you do a lot of different things with photos that would normally be hard to do using Apple’s existing tools. You can view and transfer photos easily.
- Look through your photos on your iOS device for free, including HEIC format images.
- Back up your iPhone photos, whether they’re on your Photo Stream or your Camera Roll.
- Delete your photos in bulk or individually.
- Extract whole albums from iPhone to your PC, Mac or USB drive.
- Two-way media files transfer between iPhone and computer without any iTunes limits.
Steps for Viewing iOS 11 HEIC Photos on Your PC:
Step 1: Download and install TunesMate from the official site to your PC. Connect your device to your PC, then launch TunesMate on your computer.
Step 2: Click at the tab on the main screen that says Photos. Now the main part of the screen should be populated with thumbnails of the photos on your device. You can now look through the thumbnails or preview individual photos.
1.2 Through iCloud Photo Library
You can also use iCloud library to view your photos. Simply do this:
Step 1: Download the iCloud application to your PC.
Step 2: Open iCloud and click where it says Options.
Step 3: Check the box next to iCloud Photo Library.
Step 4: Click where it says Done at the bottom.
Step 5: Click Apply, then make sure that iCloud Photo Library is turned on on all of your Apple devices (in Settings > Photos > iCloud Photo Library). Now you should be able to view your photos on iCloud Photo Library on your PC.
2. How to Convert HEIC Photos to JPG for Free
The next issue of course is how to convert HEIC to JPG or other common formats, so that the images will be easier to work with. There are a few ways that you can do this:
2.1 Convert Existing HEIC Photos to JPG Easily
There are some HEIC-to-JPG converters available, including online converters and PC converters. It's not suggested to use online converter if you concern about privacy, as the converted photos are stored in their cloud server. It's not sure your photos will be completed erased from the cloud or not.
To avoid any privacy leak, you'd better consider the PC app iMyFone HEIC Converter. With it, you can easily convert iOS 11 new photos from HEIC to JPGs or JPEGs.
- Convert HEIC to JPG, including photos on computer or in iOS 11 device. (You don't need to transfer HEIC photos to computer)
- No damage to the quality of converted JPGs. (You can adjust photo quality as well)
- Conversion is done locally, which doesn't cause privacy leak.
- View HEIC photos one by one for free if you use "Convert Single Photo".
- Directly drop the HEIC photos to the converter or select files.
2.2 Turn Off HEIC Formatting on iOS 11 for Later Photos
The first method is to disable the HEIC format setup on your iOS 11. This only works for the later photos, but is not available for existing photos. When you turn it off, the photos you will shoot later will be stored in JPG format. To make it, just go to Settings > Camara > Formats and tap Most Compatible.
Note: This settings doesn't work for the existing photos, but for the photos shot later. You should use converter for the existing HEIC images.
