Abstract: The market share of Windows 8 is only 2.6%, and Microsoft hopes all the Windows 8 users to update their system to Windows 10.
Microsoft is always trying to canvass its users to upgrade their old system to Windows 10. Recently, it took an action which seems a little mandatory. Microsoft officially declared they would stop the technical support for Windows 8 from January, 12, 2016, and the Windows 8 users couldn't receive the notification about Microsoft’s update.
So how do you update windows 8? Do you have to abandon it right now? Don't worry! For now, Windows 8 users can also upgrade to Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 is free for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to upgrade before July, 29, 2016.
We have to say, Microsoft spares no effort to remind users that there will be no opportunity for Microsoft windows 8 updates. January 13, 2016 should be the time Microsoft pushing the system patch. But because Microsoft declared stopping technical support for Windows 8, this patch update is only for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users.
Windows 8 was deemed as the revolutionary Windows system by Microsoft. However, according to the feedback of many users, the system is not so popular as Windows XP. Some users call it the “Second Vista”, considering Windows 8 changes too much on desk.
According to the research data of Net Application on November, 2015, among all the computer systems, the market share of Windows 8 is only 2.6%, and that of Windows 8.1 is 10.72%. Windows 7 is still the most widely used Windows operating system, whose market share was 56.53% up to the end of September, 2015. At the same time, Windows XP bucks the trend with the market share growing to 12.21% from 0.07%.
For Microsoft, Windows 8 users are most likely to upgrade to Windows 10 among all the old Windows system users. And Windows 10 is so important for Microsoft. It not only represents the latest technique of Microsoft operating system, but also bear the important mission to turn around the current situation of Microsoft. On mobile market, Microsoft wants to strive for market share from iOS and Android system.
Different with any Windows system before, Windows 10 can offer unified platform for all the hardware serving for Microsoft, and are available for all the Windows devices in different size and category. If Microsoft can attract more users in mobile and business fields, it will gain more benefit.
Microsoft plans to increase Windows 10 users up to 1 billion in 2-3 years. However, the spread speed of Windows 10 has been slowed. According to the report of Civic Science, almost half of users indicate they have no desire to upgrade to Windows 10. Only 21% of users say they will upgrade in one year.
Different with Microsoft, its competitor Apple goes smoothly on promoting new system. On the WWDC 2015, related person in charge revealed that more than 55% of Mac active users have upgraded to Yosemite system.
For some extent, the situation that Microsoft update windows 8 no more has a limited impact on stimulating users to upgrade to Windows 10. To take previous case as example, while Microsoft suspended the update for the popular Windows XP, lots of users chose to use third-party software to protect their data.
Of course, the patch Microsoft pushed could make up security vulnerabilities. And it seems there is no reason why the few Windows 8 users don't upgrade their system to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
