When switching devices, the most troubling thing for most people is how to get all the data on the old device to the new one. If you have a backup, you can simply restore the backup to the new device to transfer the data. But what if the data is specific to a certain app like WhatsApp? In this case, simply restoring the backup may not be sufficient. You need a way to get the old WhatsApp account to the new phone and in this article we will share with you how you can do that;
1. How to Use Old WhatsApp Account on New Phone
For this process to work, you need to ensure that the new phone number you want to use is active, meaning that it is able to make and receive calls and SMS as well as have a data connection. With that said, here’s how to change the phone number on the old device;
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your device. Now go to Menu (three dots) > Settings > Account > Change Number.
Step 2: Enter the old country code and phone number you are using.
Step 3: Enter the new number you want to use (the new device’s phone number”).
Step 4: Follow the instructions to complete the verification process. When you’re done, we recommend backing up the data in your WhatsApp account. To do that go to Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Backup.
All you have to do now is to verify the new phone number on the new device when you are ready to use WhatsApp on that device. You may also need to transfer the old chats and contacts to the new device if you want to continue where you left off.
2. Tips and Tricks to Change WhatsApp Account
The following are just some tips to help you easily change your WhatsApp account to a new device;
Restore WhatsApp Chats to the New Phone
When switching to a new device, it is a good idea to create a manual backup on the old device. This is the best way to ensure even the most recent chats and contacts will be moved to the new device when restoring the backup.
To create a manual backup on an iOS device, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup and tap “Back up Now”.
For Android devices, go to Settings > Chat Settings and then tap “Backup Conversations”.
Now to restore the backup on the new device, uninstall WhatsApp and then reinstall it back on the device. Follow the setup process and when prompted to restore the backup, follow the simple steps to do that.
If you want to keep your friends or family members from reading your WhatsApp messages, you can lock WhatsApp. To do that, download the WhatsApp Lock App from the App Store or the Google Play Store. With this app installed on your device, you can set up a unique PIN required before someone can access your WhatsApp account.
Create Shortcuts of Your Contacts
To communicate quickly and easily, you can create a shortcut of your most used WhatsApp contacts on your home screen.
To do that, press and hold the contact and then select “Add Conversation Shortcut” in the menu that appears.
This feature is not available on WhatsApp iOS though.
3. Directly Transfer WhatsApp Messages from one Phone to Another

Step 2: Connect both devices to the computer. You may need to enable USB debugging on Android and unlock an iOS device before the program detects them.
Please Note: Make sure that the old device is the “Source” device and the new device is the “Destination” device. If this order is not correct, click “Switch” to re-order the device.
