Keldeo, the Mythical Water and Fighting-type Pokémon, is finally making its long-awaited return to Pokémon GO in 2025. Known as the youngest member of the Swords of Justice alongside Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, Keldeo is one of the most anticipated Legendary-level Pokémon due to its rarity and unique typing.

Trainers first encountered Keldeo during the 2022 Something Extraordinary Special Research event, which required a paid ticket. Now, Niantic has announced its comeback in the 2025 Tales of Transformation season, allowing players to obtain Keldeo for free, including its Resolute Form for the very first time.

Keldeo is a Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation V of the mainline series. It belongs to the special group known as the Swords of Justice, making it a companion to Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion.

In Pokémon GO, Keldeo has two different forms:

Ordinary Form

The standard version of Keldeo, which was first released in 2022.

Resolute Form

A slightly different appearance, characterized by longer horns and a more aggressive stance. This form debuts in 2025.

Typing: Water + Fighting

In 2025, trainers can obtain Keldeo through the “Tales of Transformation” Special Research, which launched on September 2, 2025. To secure your encounter, you must complete the first step of this research before it disappears in December 2025.

This marks the first free opportunity to catch Keldeo, giving players who missed its initial debut another chance. Back in December 2022, Keldeo was only available through the paid “Something Extraordinary” Special Research ($7.99).

Steps to obtain Keldeo:

Log in during the season: All trainers will receive access to the seasonal research at no cost.

Complete the research tasks: These tasks will involve catching Pokémon, battling in raids, spinning PokéStops, and similar objectives.

Final encounter: The last stage of the research will reward trainers with an encounter with Keldeo.

For the first time, Keldeo’s Resolute Form is also included, giving players access to both forms within the same season.

Note

Free Access: Unlike the original paid release, this research doesn’t cost PokéCoins or money.

Duplicate Owners: If you already own Keldeo, you’ll receive Keldeo Candy instead of another encounter.

Previous Release: The 2022 research didn’t allow for a second Keldeo, making this 2025 release more generous.

Resolute Form: During this seasonal storyline, trainers will also unlock the ability to transform Keldeo into its Resolute Form for the first time in Pokémon GO.

Keldeo’s Water and Fighting dual typing provides excellent coverage. Its move pool allows it to challenge a wide range of Pokémon in both PvP and raid formats.

Recommended Moveset

• Fast Move: Low Kick (Fighting) or Poison Jab (Poison, but strong coverage)
• Charged Moves: Sacred Sword (Fighting) + Hydro Pump (Water)

Sacred Sword is a powerful Fighting move that gives Keldeo strong utility against Steel, Dark, Normal, and Rock types. Hydro Pump provides a heavy Water-type nuke for Ground, Rock, and Fire opponents. This combination makes Keldeo versatile and unpredictable in the Great, Ultra, and Master Leagues.

As of 2025, Keldeo cannot be found in its Shiny form. Niantic has not enabled Shiny Keldeo in the game, and this is consistent with the typical release strategy for Mythical Pokémon, which often do not have their Shiny versions available upon debut. Trainers can expect that Shiny Keldeo may arrive in future events or celebrations, but for now, only Ordinary and Resolute forms are obtainable.

Keldeo is considered one of the better Mythical Pokémon in PvP thanks to its typing and access to Sacred Sword. While it does not have the raw power of Legendary Pokémon like Kyogre or Groudon, it offers unique coverage.

In raids, Keldeo functions best as a Fighting-type attacker, rivaling Terrakion with Sacred Sword. While not the top Water attacker, its versatility makes it useful for players lacking other raid staples.

For PvP enthusiasts, Keldeo shines in the Ultra League and Master League. Its Fighting-type damage lets it pressure Steel-heavy teams, while its Water typing gives it coverage against Ground and Rock. Players who unlock a second charged move will find it a flexible counter against a wide array of meta threats.

For raids, Keldeo should be used primarily against Rock- and Steel-type bosses. It is not as strong as Mega or Shadow Fighting types but provides solid damage as part of a balanced raid team.

No. Like other Mythical Pokémon, Keldeo cannot be traded. Each trainer must obtain it through Special Research.
