Part 1: What are Shadow Pokémon?
Shadow Pokémon are corrupt creatures who are specifically designed for criminal activities in the game.
They help players snatch collections from other people who have peacefully collected all the Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon were first introduced in Pokémon Colosseum and since then they’ve been seen in almost every Pokémon game.
In Pokémon GO, Team Go Rocket was responsible for introducing shadow Pokémon. A year ago, when the team invaded Pokémon GO, they brought hundreds of evil Shadow Pokémon.
It’s important to understand that Shadow Pokémon look a lot like regular Pokémon.

Part 2: How to Get Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon GO
Now, let’s understand how to get a shadow Pokémon in Pokémon GO. First, you’ll have to spin a Pokéspot that’s been invaded by Team Go Rocket. As soon as you’ll spin the Pokéspot, you’ll be challenged by the Team Go Rocket in a battle.
The battle works like any other Pokémon GO battle where you can create your own team of Pokémon to defeat the opponent’s Shadow Pokémon.
Note that Team GO Rocket uses three similar Shadow Pokemon. To win, use Pokémon that counter their attacks. Defeat a Shadow Pokémon only this way.
Once you’ve defeated the Team GO Rocket, you’ll get premiere Pokéballs that’ll help you capture one of the Shadow Pokémon. But, be extra careful because catching such creatures is not a piece of cake.
And, after you’ve successfully catch a Shadow Pokémon, Purify or keep Shadow version. Players purify Pokémon for better stats and lower power-up costs. Since Shadow Pokémon are useful, players keep them.
Part 3:How to Purify Shadow Pokémon?
- Purifying a Shadow Pokémon will give the creature a special power that’ll allow it to return back to the original (non-corrupted state). The good news is that it’s quite easier to purify a Pokémon GO Shadow Pokémon. All you need is Stardust and some candies to do the job.
- The stardust/candy cost will vary for each Shadow Pokémon. In general, it depends on the rarity of the specific Pokémon that you’re trying to purify. For instance, easily available species like Rattata and Zubat will only require 1,000 Stardust and one candy for purification.
- Rare Pokémon GO creatures like Articuno will cost 20,000 Stardust. These types of rare species are legendary Pokémon and it’s always a challenge to purify them.
After the purification completes, you’ll receive dedicated awards depending on the Pokémon you’ve just purified. In the case of legendary Pokémon, you’ll receive Premiere Pokéballs to catch and purify more and more Shadow Pokémon.
Part 4: Is There a Benefit for Keeping Shadow Pokemon?
Can Shadow Pokémon offer any benefits in your collection? Yes! Their attacking powers can help you win PvP battles. Their attacks are tough to counter and ideal for winning battles post-raid.
Like any Pokémon in GO, Shadow Pokémon have drawbacks. High attack, weak defense - vulnerable to counters. Thus, a counter to your Shadow Pokémon implies their defeat.
Shadow Pokémon are costly to energize. As they faint often, you'll need to revive them frequently. More potion means more Stardust. If you accept the tradeoff, a Shadow Pokémon will aid you in the game.
